Landscape

In the centre of Marugán, the Fuente Virgen de la Salud spring is located in a park with an exercise area for older people. Cerro del Miradero rises along the road to Monterrubio and offers beautiful views over the Campiña and the Sierra.

History and Townscape

From 1086, Marugán was under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Abbey of Santa María La Real de Párraces. This jurisdiction ended in 1837 in the course of the Mendizábal disentailment.

The historic townscape includes granite doorways with horizontal lintels and engraved inscriptions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The ruins of the Granja de Bernuy preserve the entrance to a former hermitage. The Granja de Bernuy was inhabited until the first half of the 20th century.

The old water tank of Marugán was built of brick in the middle of the 20th century. The livestock enclosure at Siete Fuentes is one of the elements of civil architecture in Marugán.

Routes

The Ruta Abadía de Párraces is 17.59 kilometres long, follows a linear asphalt route and presents no particular difficulties. It can be completed on foot, by bicycle or by car.

The route to the Iglesia de San Nicolás de Bari passes through Marugán; it also runs through Lastras del Pozo and to the ruins of the Granja in Bernuy de Marugán. The Ruta de los Claustros begins in Marugán at the church with its magnificent Mudéjar coffered ceiling and runs between the Moros and Voltoya rivers.

The two routes can be considered separately according to their route format, means of transport and connection with the landscape.

Culture and Festivals

Santa Águeda is celebrated in Marugán on 5 February; the festival is organised by women. Semana Santa includes a Stations of the Cross procession from the crosses of El Calvario to the cemetery.

The El Santo Entierro procession, also known as La Carrera, is illuminated by large fires lit at various points throughout the town. The Iglesia de San Nicolás de Bari in Marugán has a polygonal apse and an attractive bell gable.

The Virgen de la Salud patron saint festivities take place in Marugán in May at Pentecost and can last four days. They end on Tuesday with a Mass and the singing of La Salve.
