Discover Carrascal del Río: Nature, Trails and History

Almost one third of Carrascal del Río's area belongs to the Hoces del Río Duratón Nature Park. Pine forests lie to the west of the town, while gorges, scrubland and holm oak forests are found to the east. Almost 768 pairs of griffon vultures breed in the cliffs of the Hoces del Río Duratón; there are also populations of Egyptian vultures, peregrine falcons, golden eagles and eagle owls there.

Culture and History

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, with its Romanesque origins, is part of the town's history. Traditional wine presses have also been preserved in Carrascal del Río. By the river stands a mill with its complete hydraulic system, which has likewise been preserved. Remains of Roman walls add to the town's historical traces.

The Ermita de San Frutos is a former Benedictine monastery dating from the 12th century. Several early medieval anthropomorphic tombs have been preserved in the cemetery near the hermitage. Carrascal del Río also hosts festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción and San Roque.

Trails and Activities on the Duratón

Senda 4 – Camino de San Frutos is a 1 km trail with impressive views. No prior authorisation is required, and the trail can be walked year-round. The Barrancos del Duratón circular route is almost 15 km long, runs between Carrascal del Río and Castrojimeno, is fully signposted and features numerous information boards.

Senda 3 – Ruta de la Molinilla is an easy, 1.8 km educational trail that passes five caves in around 30 minutes. It is also the only route to the bottom of the gorge that can be reached by car. The Camino de San Frutos follows two variants – through the Sierra or via Caballar – to the Ermita de San Frutos in the municipality of Carrascal del Río; access is via Villaseca.

Burgomillodo belongs to Carrascal del Río and is considered one of the larger centres for water sports, kayaking and rowing in Castilla y León. Andatura offers guided canoe tours on the Duratón from Carrascal del Río, provides the equipment and handles the administration of permits for the nature park.

For cycling tours, the Barrancos y Hoces MTB route is available: it is 44.5 km long and has a high difficulty level, although it initially runs along a flat section by the Duratón River.
