Otero de Herreros lies at the foot of the Sierra del Quintanar. The town combines its centre with churches, pilgrimage sites, mining history, and trails through the countryside. Those considering a holiday apartment in Otero de Herreros as a base for their stay will therefore find several different focal points: sacred art, historical metallurgy, archaeological evidence, and a traditional pilgrimage in May.
Townscape between the Sierra and metallurgy
The town centre preserves elements of traditional metallurgy as well as rural homes and associated outbuildings. These traces give Otero de Herreros its own character; at the same time, the town lies at the foot of the Sierra del Quintanar.
Church art with distinctive details
The parish church of Iglesia de los Santos Justo y Pastor stands at the highest point of the municipality. It is visible from numerous places and is dedicated to Saints Justo and Pastor. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross; it also has a single-nave layout with three sections and a polygonal apse divided into three panels. Two large paintings by Francisco Camilo from 1659 are located on the side panels of the main altarpiece.
The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Adrada is also located outside the town near a stream and is a site of particular local devotion. The building features a Gothic design. Its first construction phase can be dated to the late 15th century, while work continued in the following centuries. The Ermita de San Roque is a protected cultural heritage site of cultural interest (Bien de Interés Cultural, B.I.C.) and stands on a hill overlooking the road. Inside, wall paintings cover the walls except in the altar area; on the left-hand side, they depict scenes from the Passion of Christ. Construction work on the Ermita de San Roque was carried out in 1583 under the direction of stonemason Juan de Gogorza.
Archaeological mining zone in the area
Cerro de los Almadenes is an archaeological mining zone within the municipality of Otero de Herreros. Copper mining there has been documented from prehistoric or early historic times until the beginning of the 20th century. Cerro de los Almadenes was protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of archaeological zone. Preserved features include tunnel entrances and mine galleries, areas for crushing and washing ore, spoil heaps, as well as roasting furnaces, smelting furnaces, and reverberatory furnaces.
Trails and living pilgrimage traditions
The first stage of the Camino Natural de la Cañada Real Soriana Occidental between El Espinar and Otero de Herreros begins beside the municipal cemetery and the recreation area of Otero de Herreros. The Cañada Real Soriana Occidental route crosses the Pililla and Tejera streams via restored stone bridges. The traditional Día de las Aguas pilgrimage also takes place in May: the image of the patron saint, Virgen de la Adrada, is carried along the Stations of the Cross to the parish church, remains there for fifteen days, and then returns to the hermitage.
