Culture and History

Santo Tomás Church in Sanchonuño is a Baroque church with a basilica-style floor plan. Its main altarpiece dates from the 16th century. Five paintings depict scenes from the life of Saint Thomas; two further paintings on the predella portray four apostles. The main altarpiece and the entire presbytery are covered by a large guardapolvo in the late Baroque style, which is considered rare in the region.

The oldest archaeological remains identified in the surrounding area were discovered at Pago de las Cotarras; they date from the Bronze Age. Remains of a Visigothic settlement were also discovered near Pago de las Cotarras. The Herrero brothers' artisanal blacksmith's workshop preserves an almost vanished craft tradition. The interior, craftsmanship and archaeological sites thus provide separate approaches to the locality's cultural themes.

Festivals and Customs

On February 5, the women of the town gather in Sanchonuño for Santa Águeda. Saint Anthony of Padua is celebrated in Sanchonuño on June 13. The fiestas in honor of the Virgen del Rosario are held twice a year: on the first weekend in August and the first weekend in October; bull runs take place at night. The dates can be viewed as separate occasions within the annual calendar.

Sanchonuño is surrounded by extensive vegetable-growing areas where strawberries, beets, lettuce, endives, parsnips, potatoes, leeks and carrots are cultivated.
