Culture and History

The Vaccaean city wall of Cauca dates from the late 4th or early 3rd century BC. More than 200 metres of Coca’s medieval city wall remain in their original location. The Domus Romana in Coca preserves almost 200 metres of Roman remains with colourful frescoes up to two metres high.

The Torre de San Nicolás in Coca is the only visible remnant of the vanished Romanesque church of San Nicolás. The Puerta de la Villa, also called the Puerta de Segovia, has a brick alfiz on its outer side; on its inner side, a painted Deesis depiction is displayed on a panel above the lintel. The Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor contains the tombs made of Carrara marble by Doménico Fancelli and Bartolomé Ordóñez. Coca’s traditional houses are characterised by interwoven roof tiles laid lengthwise and concavely. Three Vaccaean verracos have been preserved: one within the castle grounds and two in the vicinity of the Puerta de la Villa.

Forest and Trails

Coca’s forest landscape includes 8,000 hectares of catalogued public forest with PEFC certification. Stone pines and, above all, maritime pines characterise these areas; there are also additional private forest areas. The Museo Nacional Forestal CEREBOSMA is located in Coca, comprises two buildings and features exhibitions on nature and forest-related topics, resin extraction methods and tools, as well as collections on trees, seeds, fauna, fungi and forest plants.

The Ruta de los refugios resineros leads to three restored shelters that formerly provided resin workers with protection from the weather and served as resting places. The Vía Verde del Valle del Eresma is suitable for walking and cycling; it passes through the town of Coca, which is named as one of the places along the route.

The festival in honour of Nuestra Señora and San Roque takes place in Coca on 15 and 16 August and includes running of the bulls, capeas, fire bulls and fireworks. The municipal Casa del Peregrino in Coca is located at Avda. Juan Pablo II 42 and has 16 sleeping places in bunk beds, as well as mattresses and blankets.
