Culture and Festivities

Espacio Nicomedes García is a municipal centre for cultural, social, educational and leisure initiatives. The annual Romería de Nuestra Señora de la Aparecida takes place on the second or third Saturday in June. It includes a procession with a carriage accompanied by tambourines, bagpipes and traditional dances. In August, the patron-saint festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción and San Roque take place.

Sacred History

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Aparecida was originally the church of the abandoned settlement of Mazuelos and was formerly called Ermita de la Magdalena. In 1623, a Romanesque carved figure was found in a sarcophagus during construction work in the cemetery adjoining the ermita. The current ermita dates from 1959; its altarpiece is a Baroque work from the 17th century.

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Valverde del Majano was built in the 16th century. A fire in 1897 damaged part of the parish church. Its sacristy stands on the site of a well-preserved former Gothic chapel.

The Ermita de la Soledad is located at the entrance to the town, on the road from Valverde to Segovia. It was originally dedicated to San Sebastián and acquired its present name after statues of saints and the Virgin were transferred there from an older chapel. Construction work was completed on 25 July 1841; the ermita was consecrated on that day. An exterior plaque gives 1840 as the year of construction.

Routes and Summer

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Aparecida is listed as a cultural point of interest on the first stage of the Camino Natural del valle del Eresma. The Piscina Municipal is open from June to mid-September.
