Burgomillodo: Nature, Water and Hiking Trails

Burgomillodo is one of the largest centers for water-based activities, kayaking and rowing in Castilla y León. The different distances, durations and locations make it easier for you to set your own priorities between short routes and longer excursions.

Hiking

The Senda de la Vega is a linear hiking trail between the bridge at Burgomillodo and the recreational area of Carrascal del Río. It is 4.5 kilometers long each way and is classified as easy. It runs outside the boundaries of the nature park and is therefore not subject to park restrictions. In the immediate vicinity of Burgomillodo, the Camino de acceso a San Frutos leads from the San Frutos car park as an interpretive footpath of low difficulty, covering 925 meters each way.

Nature and Landscape

The Parque Natural Hoces del Río Duratón extends along the gorges formed by the Río Duratón from Sepúlveda to the Embalse de Burgomillodo. In some places, the height difference in the Duratón Gorge exceeds 100 meters. The high cliffs of the Parque Natural Hoces del Río Duratón are home to almost 250 breeding pairs of griffon vultures, as well as numerous Egyptian vultures, golden eagles and peregrine falcons.

Culture and History

In the immediate vicinity of Burgomillodo, the Priorato de San Frutos, now known as the Ermita de San Frutos, preserves the remains of an old monastic convent on a bend in the Río Duratón. A viewpoint on the Camino de acceso a San Frutos offers views of the Embalse de Burgomillodo, which forms one of the boundaries of the Parque Natural Hoces del Río Duratón. At Los Muladares in Burgomillodo, the remains of a Romanized indigenous settlement and a Roman villa were discovered; the site is not signposted. Monte El Enebral in Burgomillodo is home to numerous juniper and Phoenician juniper trees, some of which are several hundred years old.

Water and Geology

The Presa del embalse de Burgomillodo is a concrete gravity dam on the Río Duratón. The date December 31, 1953, is associated with the Presa del embalse de Burgomillodo. Burgomillodo is a stop of approximately 30 minutes on the geological tourism route to aeolian sand deposits.

Situral – Rutas en piragua offers a canoe route in the Parque Natural de las Hoces del Río Duratón on the Embalse de Burgomillodo downstream between the bridge at Villaseca and the dam. Situral's canoe trip takes approximately three hours; including arrival at the facilities and the return there, a total of just under four hours is usually estimated. Situral's canoe route covers approximately 8–9 kilometers on the water and is completed at a relaxed pace with the necessary breaks.
