Discover Fuentidueña: History, Springs and Hiking Trails

Fuentidueña was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2007 because of its historic town ensemble. The walled complex had three entrance gates: Puerta Salidero, Puerta de la Calzada and Puerta de Trascastillo.

Culture and History

Castillo de Fuentidueña was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural together with the town walls. Based on the characteristics of its walls, its construction is dated to the 12th and 13th centuries. The Romanesque church of San Martín was built in two phases: the tower and the single-nave church date from the 10th century, while the apse dates from the mid-12th century.

The San Martín necropolis comprises around two hundred anthropomorphic graves carved into the rock around the church. The graves date from the 10th to the 17th century. Iglesia de San Miguel is a Romanesque church protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural.

Capilla del Pilar, also known as Capilla de los Condes de Montijo, is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, was completed in 1720 and is Neoclassical. Hospital de la Magdalena was founded to accommodate the poor and sick of Fuentidueña and its alfoz; it was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural on 18 May 1995.

The local festive tradition includes the Chisquereta: a large bonfire lit on the eve of the Immaculate Conception in the church atrium.

Springs and Trails

Fuentidueña has almost thirty springs. In the El Salidero area, the de los Caños and de la Cigüeña springs join other springs to form the Río Fuentes.

The 61-kilometre cycling route Ruta del Agua begins at the Salinero springs in Fuentidueña. It has a medium difficulty level, a rolling profile, a maximum elevation of 1,192 metres and a positive gradient of 5.2 percent.

The Sendero Embalse de las Vencías hiking trail runs between Fuentidueña and San Miguel de Bernuy and can be started in either town. The hiking trail to Cerro de San Blas leads, with a medium difficulty level, to a rocky viewpoint above the Duratón.
