The Palacio del Marqués de Quintanar was originally a defensive fortress and was later transformed into a 17th-century palace with Florentine influence.

Nature and Hiking

Located on a private estate in Mata de Quintanar, the Palacio del Marqués de Quintanar features extensive woodland of holm oaks and Pyrenean oaks, as well as diverse wildlife, including deer, wild boar and badgers.

The Ruta Arroyo de Polendos - San Medel hiking route passes through the fluvially shaped landscapes of the Polendos and San Medel streams and creates a distinctive limestone landscape. Near Mata de Quintanar, this route is listed as taking two hours.

Another route is the 22-kilometre Ruta Torreiglesias - Cabañas de Polendos. It follows part of the former Camino Real de Turégano to Segovia and begins and ends in Torreiglesias.

The different time and distance details help compare hikes with different planning rhythms. For planning purposes, the two-hour route can be considered by its time frame, while the 22-kilometre route provides a different scale. Duration, distance and course therefore remain separate points of comparison. The choice between the natural surroundings, the craft route and the museums or castle to the south thus gives each plan a different thematic focus.

In the wider regional area southeast of Mata de Quintanar are the peaks of Navahonda and La Flecha. The peaks of Peñacabra and Nevera are also located in the wider regional area east of the town.

Culture and Experiences

The Ruta de la Artesanía Verde passes through Cabañas de Polendos, Mata de Quintanar and Pinillos de Polendos. This route includes free guided visits to the workshops, which last approximately one and a half hours.

During the visits, you can learn about the craftspeople’s work through their explanations and live demonstrations. Craftsmanship is a central experience in its own right alongside the hiking trails.

Several cultural destinations are located in the area south of Mata de Quintanar: the Real Casa de Moneda de Segovia is a museum, as are the Casa Museo Antonio Machado and the Museo Gastronómico de Segovia. The Alcázar of Segovia is a castle in the area south of Mata de Quintanar.

Travel planning can give different weight to the themes of craftsmanship, museums, historic buildings, nature and hiking without this having to result in a fixed daily itinerary.

For personal orientation, the main focuses can initially be considered separately: route length and duration are the priorities for hikes, while workshops, museums and historic buildings appeal to other interests. Such a comparison keeps the planning open.

When comparing a holiday apartment in Mata de Quintanar, you can compare travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions on the respective offer pages. This keeps the decision focused on the specific details of the offer while you take the cultural and natural themes described into account.
