Discover Urueñas: Cultural Heritage, Trails and Landscape
Urueñas becomes tangible through its concrete traces. The Sendero por el Cañón de Bálsamos runs through the characteristic landscape of Las Pedrizas. Over time, watercourses and erosion have created beautiful gorges there in the high plateaus; the route ends in Aldeonte.
At the exit of Urueñas towards Castroserracín, there is a refurbished leisure area with tables, benches and a play area. For your day planning, you can consider the landscape route and the open space as two different thematic focuses side by side.
Culture
The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista in Urueñas is a monumental stone building with three naves and corresponding chancel areas covered by ribbed vaults; the southern nave was converted into an atrium. Its late-medieval Gothic style was widespread in the Segovia area in the 16th century.
The Ermita del Santo Cristo del Humilladero is located in the Barrionuevo district of Urueñas. It was built in 1639, remodelled in 1882 and restored in 1985. The crosses of the local Vía Crucis have been preserved along Calle Real. Outside Urueñas are the remains of the former Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Bálsamos.
The different forms can be considered separately for your own orientation: the monumental religious building, the wayside markers and the historical trace each represent their own approach.
Traditions
The traditional Santa Águeda festival is celebrated every year in Urueñas and kept alive by the Águederas. The Semana Cultural in Urueñas is a tradition that brings people of all ages together around culture, entertainment and civic participation. During the Semana Cultural, the connection is not limited to a single programme item: culture, entertainment and civic participation together form part of this tradition. Santa Águeda adds a distinct emphasis, as the Águederas keep the annual festival alive as an independent festive tradition in Urueñas.
Nature
The main environmental features of Urueñas include grazing areas on rocky limestone slabs, holm oak stands with undergrowth and a pine forest. For your planning, you can compare grazing areas, holm oak stands and pine forest as different landscape themes.
Trails
In Urueñas, there are trails leading to shepherds’ huts scattered throughout the municipal area, where two or three people could find shelter. Urueñas also has a Springs Route. The two historic royal roads that cross the municipal area of Urueñas have now been adapted for traffic.
Springs, shepherds’ huts and historic royal roads open up different thematic lines; you can compare these trail ideas separately and arrange them according to your own daily rhythm.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Urueñas, you can first compare travel dates, apartment or room category and cancellation conditions on the respective listing page. The content of your itinerary can be organised around your preferred focuses: cultural heritage, landscape, trails or community traditions.
