Valleruela de Pedraza – Geology and Festive Culture

Valleruela de Pedraza combines geological sites with local festivals and a hermitage. The Cárcavas de Orejana y las valleruelas geotourism stop lies between the Molino del Pontón in Orejana and Valleruela de Pedraza on the SG-P-2322 at kilometres 13 and 14.

Nature

At the stop, multicoloured siliceous sands, sedimentary structures and cemented sand balls, locally called “pítoles”, can be seen. The Cretácico de la Matilla features excellent outcrops of the detrital series of the Upper Cretaceous, as well as numerous stratigraphic-sedimentological observation points. It is easily accessible from Pedraza or Sepúlveda.

The two geological sites reveal different aspects of the landscape: at the Cárcavas, the focus is on the coloured sands, sedimentary structures and cemented sand balls, while the Cretácico de la Matilla is characterised by Upper Cretaceous outcrops and observation points.

In the district of Tejadilla, a former quarry for siliceous sands, with white-grey, yellow, red and brown hues and a clearly erosion-scarred appearance, shapes the landscape. Griffon vultures can be observed in their natural habitat on the walls of this former quarry. In this way, the site combines the visible changes in the colour of the rock with neutral nature observation.

Culture

The Nuestra Señora del Amparo Hermitage is located outside Valleruela de Pedraza. Nuestra Señora del Amparo is the patron saint of the village. The statue of the Virgin in the hermitage is made of polychrome wood; it holds the infant Jesus in one hand and an apple in the other.

The Nuestra Señora del Amparo patronal festival takes place on the second weekend of September. It includes a procession and dances in front of the Virgin. As part of this festival, a Stations of the Cross leads to the Nuestra Señora del Amparo Hermitage. Thus, the festival date, procession, dances and route to the hermitage outside the village form a shared cultural context.

The Danzantes of Valleruela de Pedraza wear feather-adorned headdresses, pink skirts or underskirts, white shirts, an arrangement of silk ribbons on their backs and various ribbons on their forearms.

The Danzantas of Valleruela de Pedraza also perform Paloteo dances in traditional Segovian dress at the local festivals.

The San Cristóbal festival takes place on 10 July. The parish church of San Cristóbal is located in the highest part of Valleruela de Pedraza. Thus, Nuestra Señora del Amparo and San Cristóbal stand out in the townscape as two named festival and church references with different dates.
