The Iglesia de San Miguel in Sacramenia is an example of rural vernacular Romanesque architecture dating back to the 12th century and was classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural on 16 February 1983. When booking a holiday apartment in Sacramenia, compare travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions on the offer pages. Check this information separately: the period, the selected category and the rules for changes each answer a different question about the booking.
Culture
The Monasterium Santa María la Real, also known as the Iglesia del Monasterio de San Bernardo, was built in the 12th century and belonged to the Cistercian Order. The church of the monastery, which is also called the Iglesia del Monasterio de San Bernardo, has three naves: a central nave and two side aisles. Its layout also includes five semicircular apses.
Another Romanesque attraction is the Iglesia de Santa Marina. Its walls are made of rubble stone and ashlar masonry; inside, there are a central nave and a side aisle. The semicircular apse has a splayed window opening dating from the 12th century. The altarpiece contains medieval paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries. The furnishings also include a 13th-century baptismal font and an 18th-century silver processional cross.
The Museo de Aperos de Labranza y Enseres Tradicionales “Altamenia” in Sacramenia displays agricultural tools and traditional household items. The preserved remains of the Monasterium Santa María la Real could only be visited to a limited extent: on Wednesdays from 10:00 to 13:00.
Trails and countryside
The Ruta de la Fuente Vieja hiking trail leads from one side of the village of Sacramenia to the Fuente Vieja recreation area. As a linear trail, it is less than one kilometre long. The route is signposted with information boards at both ends.
Ruta 3: Sacramenia, Fuentidueña y Valle de Tabladillo begins in Sacramenia in a landscape of limestone hills. On the hill overlooking Sacramenia are the remains of the Iglesia de San Miguel, a good example of early Romanesque architecture. A hermitage offers views of Sacramenia and the surrounding area.
For planning your own day, the trail descriptions allow you to consider trail type, length and connection to the landscape separately. The churches, museum, wine-making tradition and countryside each offer different focal points, without prescribing any particular order.
Wine and local tradition
Sacramenia’s traditional wine-growing culture included small underground wine presses on the mountain slopes; almost every family owned a small vineyard there. The Bodega Finca Cárdaba in the vicinity of Sacramenia combines this regional connection with a tasting: during a visit, three wines, the vermouth “El Jardín del Mediquin” and an aperitif are sampled.
In the surrounding area south of Sacramenia, Bodega Finca Cárdaba offers guided tours of the vineyard and winery by prior reservation.
