Pelayos del Arroyo – Romanesque Architecture, Trails and Festivals

In Pelayos del Arroyo stands the parish church of San Vicente Mártir, dedicated to Saint Vincent. It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and is considered a good example of rural Romanesque architecture in Segovia; by Royal Decree 235/1981 of 16 January 1981, it was declared a national historic-artistic monument.

Culture

The local architectural heritage also includes the portico of the Iglesia de San Miguel de Tenzuela. It has four arches as well as an additional entrance arch on one of its sides; the capital reliefs are predominantly decorated with plant motifs. In Pelayos del Arroyo and Tenzuela, traditional houses made of stone, wood and white cement, together with the characteristic Arabic tile roofs, shape the appearance of the villages. The two church references create different focal points: San Vicente Mártir represents the historically dated Romanesque village church, while the portico of San Miguel de Tenzuela makes an impression through its arches and plant-motif capital reliefs.

The history of the village dates back to the 12th century: Pelayos del Arroyo was a town belonging to the Chapter of Segovia from the 12th century until 1536.

Nature and Trails

Stage 2 follows rural paths and runs alongside streams, draws on the legend of the famous bandit Tuerto Pirón, and brings Romanesque heritage to life in Pelayos del Arroyo. In the area around Pelayos del Arroyo are Turégano Castle and the peaks of Peñacabra, Navahonda, Nevera and La Flecha.

Geographical Location

Pelayos del Arroyo is 24.8 km from Segovia via the N-110 and lies on the road connecting Sotosalbos with Aldeasaz. In the wider regional area are the Fundación Centro Nacional del Vidrio, the Palacio Real La Granja de San Ildefonso and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente.

Festivals

The Festividad del Dulce Nombre de María is associated with the second weekend of September. The Fiesta de San Vicente Mártir is associated with the third weekend of July. At the Feria y Cocido Solidario in Pelayos del Arroyo, participants could enjoy a Cocido dish from 3:00 p.m.; the afternoon programme included bingo as well as a magic and comedy performance by Nano Arranz.
