Valtiendas – Wine, Churches and Village Traditions
Valtiendas combines a long tradition and extensive experience in the production of red wines with church architecture, festivals and insights into the work of regional wineries. Bodega Tinto Redreja is a family-owned winery that is approximately 100 years old and is now run by the fourth generation. Valtiendas therefore brings together both a well-established history of winegrowing and ongoing family continuity.
The traditional wine cellars of Valtiendas are located on the upper slope of the town. During tours of Bodega Vagal, its organic farming practices and wine production are explained. Weather permitting, Finca Cárdaba offers tours of its vineyard, chapel and bodega. The experience includes tastings of three representative wines, the vermouth “El Jardín del Mediquin” and an aperitif.
Advance booking is absolutely essential for tours of Finca Cárdaba. They take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 11:30 a.m. for groups of at least eight people, and on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. with no minimum group size. The fixed days of the week and the different group sizes make the appointment a distinct part of this offering; in addition, the weather condition remains decisive for tours of the vineyard, chapel and bodega.
Churches and Architectural History
In Pecharromán, in the municipality of Valtiendas (Segovia), the Iglesia de Santa María de Cárdaba is designated as a heritage monument as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The 12th-century Romanesque church has a single nave and a semicircular apse. Its clear spatial form and chronological classification are among the defining features of the building.
In the Coto de Cárdaba, the church of the former Santa María de Cárdaba priory has been preserved. Next to the town hall stands the Fuente de los Diablillos, a fountain built in 1917 with two devil figures. Both places combine preserved historic structures with distinctive details in the townscape.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción contains Baroque altarpieces and a processional cross from the 16th century. It also has a Neoclassical main altarpiece. The church thus brings together furnishings from different art-historical and architectural contexts.
The Iglesia de San José is a rectangular church with a flat-ended apse. Its choir is located at the rear and dates from the 19th century. Together with the Romanesque church of Santa María de Cárdaba and the later furnishings of the Asunción, this creates a chronological arc from the 12th to the 19th century.
Festivals and the Course of the Year
On 15 May, Valtiendas celebrates San Isidro with a romería, the blessing of the fields and a communal snack. Valtiendas also maintains the tradition of a wine harvest festival, which is celebrated in September. The annual cycle thus combines a spring festival held on a fixed date with a celebration of the grape harvest in September.
