Culture

Only a Gothic façade remains of the Palacio del Marqués de Casablanca; the building is privately owned. Only part of the Palacio de los Cáceres has likewise survived: only the portal remains, while the palace itself is privately owned.

The church of San Pedro Apóstol has Romanesque origins, which can be discerned from its bricked-up arches and holy-water font. It has a central nave and a Latin-cross floor plan. San Pedro also houses a collection of silverwork. The Chapel of Cristo de la Salud houses an image from the school of the Valladolid sculptor Gregorio Fernández.

Bobbin lace-making is a tradition of its own: in Sauquillo de Cabezas, threads are interwoven using spools known as “bolillos”. The work is secured with needles on a padded cushion called the “mundillo”; a perforated pattern known as the “picado” serves as a template.

Nature and Trails

Its heyday was around the 4th century; the villa may have remained in use well into the 5th century. In the surrounding area, between Aguilafuente and Sauquillo de Cabezas, there are also the ruins of Santa Lucía, with the remains of a Roman agricultural building.
