Corral de Ayllón: Hiking Trails, Church Art and Local History

Corral de Ayllón can be discovered through its paths, landscapes and伝承 local history. On stage 8 of the Camino Natural de la Cañada Real Soriana Occidental from Riaza to Ayllón, the route reaches the municipality from kilometre point 134 onwards. On this stage, particular caution is required after crossing the SG-V-9115 road; pedestrians and cyclists must each use the correct side of the road. In the natural surroundings, small streams and waterways flow down from the peaks of the neighbouring Sierra de Ayllón; several hiking trails provide access to the area.

Nature and Trails

Several described routes begin at Plaza de la Iglesia. The hike “De la Guadaña al pico del Cerro” leads through Parque Miguel Arribas and continues towards Pico del Cerro. “Entre cárcavas, robles y encinas” also starts at Plaza de la Iglesia in Corral de Ayllón and runs through ravines as well as oak and holm-oak forests. The route is 7.1 kilometres long.

“De la Guadaña al pico del Cerro” is 5 kilometres long, has a difficulty rating of 5 and is estimated to take two hours. The hike “Del monte a la Vega pasando por Pajares de Fresno” begins at the same square, covers 8 kilometres, also has a difficulty rating of 5 and takes about three hours. Another scenic route is called “El robledal de Riboto, el encinar de Saldaña y el pinar del Corral”. It is 10 kilometres long and leads through oak, holm-oak and pine forests in Corral de Ayllón. Further Routes and Aviation

“Corriendo por la llanura más grande de Segovia” leads around a historic airfield and is 9.3 kilometres long. When running, the route can be completed in about 50 minutes; on foot, it takes approximately two and a half hours. The route “Salir a correr por el monte” follows paths with hardly any inclines and is also 9.3 kilometres long. For experienced runners, the running time is about one hour; the difficulty rating is 3.

The private Aeródromo de La Nava is also located within the municipality. It is dedicated to private aviation, particularly gliding, and organises flights for visitors with no previous experience. The route around the historic airfield and the private Aeródromo de La Nava provide two points of reference to aviation.

Culture and History

A sheep pen has been preserved in the municipality as evidence of the area’s former livestock farming. The origins of Corral de Ayllón are linked to the livestock-raising tradition of the surrounding area: the land near the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental was used for years to pen the residents’ livestock.

The Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción was built in the 18th century over a Romanesque church, of which only the portal remains. The chapel of the Virgen de la Soledad contains two Baroque altarpieces. The main altarpiece is Neoclassical and includes a tabernacle and a revolving display case for the monstrance.

The Museo de La Fragua is a museum of popular culture. It presents former ways of life in the municipality and the traditional work of the blacksmith. The collection includes nearly 200 objects contributed by residents from the fields of blacksmithing, agriculture and livestock farming. Festivals

At the beginning of October, Corral de Ayllón holds a religious celebration in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, with a mass and procession. It also includes an auction of carrying platforms, sweets and gifts for the Virgin, followed the next day by a requiem mass.

On 15 May, Corral de Ayllón celebrates San Isidro with a procession to bless the fields and the singing of the Litany of the Saints.
