Santo Domingo de Pirón – Romanesque Church and Pilgrimage Routes

Santo Domingo de Pirón tells its story not only through its architectural forms, but also through craftsmanship, pilgrimage routes and the festival calendar.

Culture

The Iglesia de Santo Domingo was built between the 12th and 13th centuries. Its semicircular Romanesque apse and unusual two-arched bell gable reveal two distinctive architectural features. In 1995, the church was placed under protection as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC).

Sgraffito decorations have been preserved on some house façades. Fernando Delgado Sanz, known as “El Tuerto Pirón”, is also associated with the village; he was born in Santo Domingo de Pirón. The forge is one of the village’s sights. Another heritage feature open to visitors is a restored potro de herrar, a former shoeing stand for working horses.

The Esquileo de Alfaro was used for shearing large flocks of sheep and washing the wool in existing basins; today it lies in ruins. The former wool-washing facility preserves the remains of four natural basins as well as the chimney of the furnace used to heat the water. It is located at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama on the way to the Puerto de Malangosto.

Routes and Landscape

One stage of the Camino de San Frutos begins in Santo Domingo de Pirón, at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama, in a landscape of meadows and pastureland. The Camino Natural de la Cañada Real Soriana Occidental also has a branch leading towards Santo Domingo de Pirón.

The approximately 80-km-long Camino de San Frutos includes a mountain route and a route via Caballar; both pass through Santo Domingo de Pirón. On the Camino de San Frutos, hikers can choose between the route to the Ermita de San Frutos via Caballar and the variant via Pedraza; both variants are signposted. On this stage of the Camino de San Frutos, hikers take the route towards Tenzuela in Santo Domingo de Pirón.

The Caballar variant of the Tizneros–Basardilla–Santo Domingo de Pirón–Tenzuela stage is 15.9 km long, has a moderate to low level of difficulty and takes approximately four hours. Different route lengths, directions and travel times can be viewed side by side when planning a personal itinerary.

In the Parque de la Fuente de Arriba, the Fuente con arco de piedra is located next to the Granja Escuela La Universal. At the park entrance, there is an area with benches and a small bridge. The spring has been restored and is well preserved.

Festivals

Local festivals include a pilgrimage on 5 February in honour of Saint Águeda. San Isidro is celebrated on 15 May, and San Antonio on 13 June. The festival calendar also includes a celebration of Santo Domingo de Silos on 20 December. From 10 to 15 August, cultural and social activities take place in honour of San Roque.
