Nava de la Asunción – Culture, Nature and Trails

The Matabuey archaeological site contains a Roman rural residence for the elite, which formed part of a large agricultural and livestock estate. The murals along the Ruta de los Murales feature social criticism that encourages reflection.

Culture

The former station reception building in Nava de la Asunción now houses a museum dedicated to the writer Jaime Gil de Biedma. Casa del Caño is an 18th-century historic building. The Monumento a Fray Sebastián de Arévalo Y Torres is a sculpture inaugurated in 1982 in honour of the bishop.

The Ermita del Santo Cristo de la Expiración is the only one of the three hermitages that formerly existed in the municipality still preserved today. It dates from the 16th century and was built in several construction phases. El Caño del Obispo is a Mannerist fountain built in 1683 at the initiative of Bishop Fray Sebastián.

During Semana Cultural, the Mercado artesanal takes place in the municipal park on the last Sunday in July. Handcrafted, recycled, restored or ecological products are offered there.

Trails and Routes

The Camino de Madrid to Santiago passes through Nava de la Asunción on Stage 6 between Santa María and Coca. Ruta 8. Los Leganares ends back at its starting point after 10.6 km and passes by Caño del Obispo and Casa del Caño.

At kilometre 48 in Nava de la Asunción, the Vía Verde del Eresma begins; it runs mostly along the former railway line between Segovia and Medina del Campo. The original project to restore the former railway line as a Vía Verde covers approximately 70 km between Segovia station and the former station at Olmedo in the province of Valladolid. Different route lengths can be considered separately for planning your own day.

Nature

The Eresma and Voltoya rivers flow through the municipality of Nava de la Asunción. La Mesalta is a pine-dominated landscape known as the “Mar de Pinares”. There is a public picnic area in the Pinar de las Ordes near La Mesalta. The Ribera de Los Alisos offers views of one of the many gorges of the Eresma.
