Sotosalbos lies on the edge of the Sierra de Guadarrama and has a rich natural heritage with gentle paths. The village is located next to the dense Mata del Pirón forest and a few kilometres from Puerto de Malangosto.

Nature and Trails

The Cañada Real Soriana Occidental nature trail runs through Sotosalbos. The route can be walked and is suitable for mountain bikes for the most part; some sections are steep and require caution. The different ways of getting around and the warning about steep sections give you an objective basis for incorporating the route into your own daily itinerary.

You can also access other destinations: Migueláñez, Arcones, Consuegra De Murera, Castroserna De Arriba, Brieva, Prádena, Torrecaballeros and El Espinar.

Village, Architecture and Heritage

The centre of Sotosalbos preserves a clearly recognisable rural structure. Traditional buildings are grouped around the parish church. Traditional Segovian architecture can be seen in the Plaza Mayor, characterised by stone, white cement, wood and Arabic roof tiles.

In the Barrio de Arriba stands the Fuente de arriba, a very old spring that supplied the inhabitants of Sotosalbos with water for centuries. Inside the Iglesia de San Miguel de Sotosalbos are frescoes, a baptismal font and a sculpture of Our Lady of the Sierra.

At the exit from the municipal area of Sotosalbos, on the paths leading to Cerca del Boquerón, stands a Cruz de Canto. The traditional Potro de herrar is also part of the village's inherited heritage. It was used more often for shoeing ox-drawn teams than horses or mules.

Festivals and Traditions

On the first Sunday in August, the image of María Magdalena is carried through the streets of Sotosalbos to the music of dulzaina and tamboril. The festivities in honour of María Magdalena are the village's summer celebrations. They take place on the first weekend of August and from Monday onwards during that same week, and include sports, children's workshops, orchestras and culinary events.

The festival dates thus create different focal points in village life: Santa Águeda falls in the winter calendar, María Magdalena belongs to August, and the celebration of the local patron saint follows in early autumn. Visitors therefore experience a year-round picture made up of different customs, processions and musical accompaniment, whose specific dates are clearly distinct from one another throughout the year.

The tradition of Santa Águeda in Sotosalbos has its own distinctive timing. It is carried out by no more than seven married women, who are appointed the previous year by the female mayors. It is celebrated on the weekend closest to 5 February.

On the Sunday closest to 29 September, the image of the local patron saint is carried through the streets of Sotosalbos together with the inhabitants, accompanied by dulzaina and tamboril music. After Mass, the inhabitants traditionally carry an image of the Virgin through the streets, accompanied by the sounds of dulzaina and tamboril.
