Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol in Espirdo dates from the 17th century. Espirdo has been documented under the name “Spiritu” since 1086, was called “Spiritu de Ruviales” in 1247 and has borne its current name since the 16th century.

The Potros de Herrar are among the historical features. These are historic devices used for shoeing livestock. Espirdo is home to three different sites: the Potro de Espirdo on the road to Segovia, the Potro de Tizneros on Calle la Fuentona and the restored Potro de La Higuera on Calle Baja.

Another historical trace leads to the Ermita de la Virgen de Veladíez. It was formerly the church of a medieval settlement and lies 1.5 km outside Espirdo in the direction of Segovia, on a small hill. A Visigothic necropolis lies just a few metres from the walls of the Ermita de la Virgen de Veladíez. Its nave preserves Romanesque corbels and a portal on its southern façade.

Landscape and Nature

Geographically, Espirdo lies in the Duero Basin and in the natural region of the Miocene campiñas. These are considered gently rolling plains. The Riaza, Duratón, Cega, Pirón, Eresma and Moros rivers run through the campiña, forming broad valleys and terraces. Holm oaks, willows, ash trees, poplars, elms and pines are part of Espirdo’s described flora. Espirdo’s described fauna includes hares, partridges, quails, kites and thrushes.

Customs and Trails

The Romería de Nuestra Señora de Veladíez takes place in Espirdo on the first Sunday in May. In the second week of September, Espirdo holds the patron-saint festivities in honour of Nuestra Señora del Rosario. The Criazón de la Cacera de San Medel includes the annual cleaning of the irrigation channels.
