Escobar De Polendos – Church, Ermita and Luminarias

In the center of Escobar de Polendos stands the Iglesia de San Nicolás de Bari. This small rural religious building has a simple nave that ends in a semicircular apse. Inside, a Romanesque baptismal font with a diameter of 123 centimeters and a height of 73 centimeters has been preserved. There is also a small Romanesque holy water font measuring 76 centimeters in height and 31 centimeters in width.

Culture

The Ermita de la Virgen de la Cuesta contains several Baroque altarpieces. The central altarpiece features a Byzantine depiction of the Virgin and Child. Its main chapel is higher and narrower. Supported by thick square pillars, the nave appears to have three aisles, although it is in fact single-aisled.

History

The name Escobar de Polendos has been in use since at least the 13th century. It refers to an area along the Polendos River where bushes used for the traditional manufacture of brooms grew. The earliest surviving documentary mention of Escobar de Polendos dates from 1288 and records the purchase of eighteen hours of usage at the local mill.

Festivals

In Escobar de Polendos, the Luminarias, Nuestra Señora and San Roque festivals are celebrated on August 14, 15 and 16. During the Luminarias procession, night fires are placed five or six meters apart along the descent from the Ermita de la Virgen de la Cuesta to the church in Escobar de Polendos.

Geographical Setting

Escobar de Polendos lies on a slope in the valley of the Polendos stream. The stream runs along the eastern edge of the settlement at an elevation of approximately 904 meters. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Cuesta stands on a small hill about 500 meters from Escobar de Polendos and is clearly visible from the CL-603 road.

Next to the river, at the site where a public park was created, a horseshoeing frame has been preserved. This brings several different spatial relationships into view: the central religious building, the higher location of the ermita, the stream at the eastern edge and the historical trace by the river. These relationships can be considered separately from the festival and historical topics.

Getting There

The road connection from Segovia follows Road 601, then Regional Road 603 toward Turégano, and finally a smaller road into the village.
