Cubillo: Landscape, Culture and Holiday Apartments

Geographical Setting

Cubillo lies between the mountainous region and the peneplain of the Sierra de Guadarrama. Two watercourses are part of the local landscape: the Arroyo de La Matilla, also known as San Roque, irrigates El Cubillo, as does the Río de Santa Águeda. Thus, the geographical location and the two named watercourses stand alongside one another as distinct features.

Townscape and Culture

Four façades in El Cubillo display the typical Segovian sgraffito. Cubillo was declared a “Monumental Complex”. The parish church of San Juan is a Romanesque building with a bell tower. Cubillo is also part of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Pedraza. Façade design, church architecture, monument status and historical affiliation thus provide different approaches to the history of the town.

Festivals and Traditions

San Roque is Cubillo’s main festival and takes place on 16 August. The tradition of “La Recogida” continues in the town and now takes place early in the morning on the day after the San Roque festival; afterwards, the residents share what has been collected. Its earlier form must be distinguished from this: at that time, the children of the village school went from house to house collecting eggs or torreznos. The feast day, present-day procedure and former practice therefore mark three different temporal levels of the same tradition.

Every summer, Cubillo joins Arahuetes, Arevalillo de Cega, El Cubillo, Guijar and Valdevacas in a romería to the Watchmen’s Refuge in the municipality of Arahuetes. Afterwards, there is a communal meal with music. In addition to the local main festival, the annual calendar therefore includes a community event involving several of the named places.

Nature and the Regional Surroundings

The Castle of Turégano is a castle in the vicinity of Cubillo. In the wider regional area are the peaks of Nevera, Peñacabra, Navahonda and La Flecha. Several cultural destinations are also located there: the Fundación Centro Nacional del Vidrio and the Real Casa de Moneda de Segovia are museums, while the Palacio Real La Granja de San Ildefonso is a palace.

The named destinations differ both in character and in their spatial classification. The façades, parish church and monument status belong directly to the townscape. The castle is in the vicinity of Cubillo, while the peaks, museums and palace are assigned to the wider regional area. This keeps architecture, festival traditions, landscape and regional culture recognisable as clearly separate themes.
