Discover Sepúlveda: Gorges, Culture and Trails

Below Sepúlveda, the Río Duratón has carved a deep canyon that reaches a height difference of more than 100 metres in some places. Sepúlveda was declared a historic-artistic site in 1951.

Culture

The Romanesque Iglesia de los Santos Justo y Pastor dates from the 12th and 13th centuries and has been recognised as a national monument since 1931. The Fiesta de los Fueros is celebrated in Sepúlveda every year on the third weekend of July and recreates the atmosphere of a medieval market. Sepúlveda’s Fiestas de los Toros have been recognised as Sepúlveda’s intangible cultural heritage since 2011 and take place every year from Thursday to Monday on the last weekend of August. The two festivals take place in two clearly separate summer periods. A Romanesque building, local history and two clearly identifiable festival dates are independent cultural points of reference and do not constitute a single event.

In Sepúlveda’s historic centre, the Casa del Parque de las Hoces del Río Duratón is located in the Iglesia de Santiago. Before entering the park, the Casa offers an environmental interpretation exhibition and an audiovisual presentation. The reception area of the Casa del Parque provides visitors with information about the nature area, maps, trails and the administration of permits. This location therefore combines an informative introduction with practical information about the nature area.

Nature and Trails

The Parque Natural de las Hoces del Río Duratón extends across the municipalities of Sepúlveda, Sebúlcor and Carrascal del Río.

The Senda de los Dos Ríos is a circular trail that starts and ends at the Casa del Parque Natural Hoces del Río Duratón in Sepúlveda. The Ruta de los Miradores offers panoramic views of the gorges of the Río Duratón, Sepúlveda’s Romanesque heritage, its most important historic buildings, as well as its gates and natural and built city walls. It starts at Plaza del Trigo, where Sepúlveda’s tourist office is located.

A route connects Puente de Talcano in Sepúlveda with Puente de Villaseca in the depths of the Hoces del Río Duratón and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. A section of trail near the Casa del Parque in the town of Sepúlveda has information panels adapted for wheelchair users.
