Maderuelo – Mudéjar Church, Reservoir and Hiking Trails
The Iglesia de Santa María del Castillo is a Mudéjar church. It is considered the only religious building in Segovia province with surviving remains in the Caliphal style.
Culture
Maderuelo Siglo XII is a medieval festival that recreates everyday life in 12th-century Castile with a medieval market, crafts, music, characters dressed in period costume, fights, processions and folk scenes in the walled historic centre of Maderuelo.
The Torreón del Castillo is one of the last surviving parts of the castle that protected Maderuelo’s northern entrance. The Puente Viejo connects Maderuelo with the Ermita de la Veracruz and the higher plateaus.
Nature
The Embalse de Linares del Arroyo stretches from the foot of Maderuelo to the Hoces del Riaza and covers 690 hectares.
The Hoces del río Riaza Nature Park is designated as a ZEPA bird protection area and consists of gorges and ravines stretching for more than 12 km along the middle course of the Riaza River. Water, gorges and open landscapes can be set alongside one another as different focal points when planning your own itinerary.
On the Way
The Senda del Embalse de Linares del Arroyo hiking trail PRC-SG 10 begins in Maderuelo and leads to the Mirador de La Rivilla. The Senda de la Cañada Olvidada hiking trail begins in the medieval town of Maderuelo and follows an old livestock drovers’ route towards the Sabinar de Hornuez.
The route “De la villa de Maderuelo al Santuario de Hornuez” is 15.88 km long, moderately difficult and takes approximately 4 to 5 hours. The details can be considered alongside one another when planning the day: route length, approximate duration and difficulty level indicate different constraints.
The Maderuelo Tourist Office provides information about the surrounding area and suggests routes, guided tours and theatrically staged tours.
From the Argolla, stairs lead to a viewpoint above a restored large section of the wall; from there, the view extends over the reservoir and the Ermita de la Vera Cruz.
The Romanesque frescoes from the Ermita de la Veracruz were moved to the Museo del Prado in 1950 as a result of the construction of the reservoir; exact replicas were installed at the opposite end of the chapel.
