La Pradera de Navalhorno: Pine Forests and History

A second option is the Fuente de la Plata route. It begins at the Centro Montes de Valsaín y Cabeza de Hierro in La Pradera de Navalhorno and leads via Vado de los Tres Maderos, Fuente de la Plata, Casa del Cebo and Los Tobarejos back to the starting point. The route is approximately 6 kilometres long and takes about 3 hours.

Views and Traces of History

Cerro del Puerco borders La Pradera de Navalhorno and offers a viewpoint over the Valsaín Valley. La Pradera de Navalhorno is also connected with the historical forestry and livestock use of Monte de Valsaín. The settlement emerged at the end of the 19th century in connection with the Real Taller de Aserrío Mecánico. The origin of the settlement is traced back to the establishment of the steam-powered Real Aserradero de Valsaín in 1883.

The former Real Taller de Aserrío Mecánico de Valsaín preserves some of its original machinery. In addition, the Real Taller de Aserrío Mecánico de Valsaín was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural. As a result, La Pradera de Navalhorno reveals both its long connection with forestry and concrete evidence of technological development.

Tradition and Cycling Routes

At the San Antón celebration held in Valsaín on 17 January, there are tree-trunk cutting competitions, competitions using the Tronzadora, and demonstrations of traditional Gabarrero craftsmanship. In addition, the Montes de Valsaín contains forest roads designated for bicycle use in accordance with the use and management plan of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park.
