Archaeology and Architectural Heritage

Chañe’s characteristic structures include Pegueras. These circular or slightly oval buildings are made of fireproof bricks, have false domes and an outer clay coating. In the Pegueras, resin from the by-products of resin extraction was burned with pine-needle litter and sand to produce Pez, which was used, among other things, to seal wine barrels. Every year, usually at Easter, the Ayuntamiento de Chañe has a Peguera lit as a demonstration to provide an educational explanation of the former resin-making craft.

The parish church of San Benito Abad has three naves separated by simple and compound columns, a dome over pendentives in the crossing, a high choir and a portico. Its main altarpiece dates from the 18th century. The Ermita del Santo Cristo de la Agonía houses a life-size crucified Christ; the hermitage has two identical doors arranged symmetrically on the front façade. Built of stone, the Ermita de San Antonio lies about 500 metres from Chañe on the Cañada Arrieros. La Minerva is a very old procession inside the church that takes place on the third Sunday of every month from September to June.

Nature

Chañe is part of the Tierra de Pinares natural region. Stone pines and maritime pines form a belt of woodland around the municipality, home to numerous birds and other animals. Near Chañe, on the Río Cega, there is a waterfall called La Pesquera. Various mushroom species grow in the pine forests, including Níscalos; searching for them in autumn involves extensive walks.

Festivals and Customs

The celebrations in honour of San Roque in Chañe last four or five days. They begin on the night before the 15th with a speech and the firing of a banger; they also include the Campeonato de Motocross Nocturno every year. During the Easter tradition Rodar el Huevo y la Rosquilla, children roll a typical Rosquilla de palo on Easter Monday and a decorated boiled egg on Easter Tuesday. As part of the tradition El Mayo, the local eighteen-year-olds erect a tall pine in a prominent place in Chañe on the night of 30 April to 1 May. The Corpus Christi festival is celebrated on Thursday and on the following Sunday. As part of the San Juan tradition, residents gather “las flores de San Juan” in the pine forest on the afternoon before the festival and use them to make crosses.
