Haute-Saône presents itself as a landscape of wetlands, river valleys, historic buildings and regional products. Nature and landscape

The Plateau des Mille étangs is a wetland of European interest in the southern Vosges Saônoises. The Plateau des 1000 Étangs was formed by the retreat of the glaciers, covers 220 km² and features rare ecosystems as well as exceptional biodiversity.

The Échappée des 1000 Étangs is a multisensory route of more than 60 km with six interactive landscape stops between Faucogney-et-la-Mer and Château-Lambert. It includes the Saint-Martin church in Faucogney-et-la-Mer and the remains of Saint-Colomban's first European monastery in Annegray. The Grilloux landscape stop near Servance includes a suspended net offering an elevated view over the ponds.

In the Monts de Gy, wild orchids can be found in spring, the deer rut in autumn, as well as crossings with the Camino de Compostela and the GR154 Via Francigena.

Trails and water

The Plateau des 1000 Étangs offers more than 30 circular hiking routes and an equestrian route. There is also a marked trail and two gravel loops.

The Voie Bleue connects Luxembourg and Lyon through the valleys of the Moselle and Saône; 142 km of this route lie in Haute-Saône. The Chemin Vert connects the Voie Bleue cycle route with EuroVelo 6.

The Ognon Valley offers 150 km for canoeing as far as the Saône, with small weirs along the route. Fishing is possible on the Breuchin and Ognon rivers, which are classified as first-category rivers, as well as in private ponds.

Culture and history

UNESCO describes the Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut de Ronchamp as a work featuring a revolutionary approach to religious architecture. The chapel is a significant work by Le Corbusier and the only UNESCO site in Haute-Saône.

The Château d’Oricourt is a fortified castle dating from the 12th century and the best-preserved example of its kind in Franche-Comté.

The Château de Ray-sur-Saône stands on a rocky promontory above the Saône Valley. Its present appearance developed after the medieval construction, its destruction in the 17th century and its reconstruction in the 18th century. Visits to the Château de Ray-sur-Saône take place as part of guided tours.

Luxeuil-les-Bains combines an artistic and historical heritage with thermal waters.

Regional products

Highlighted regional foods from Haute-Saône include Gruyère, IGP Cancoillotte, Kirsch and cherries from Fougerolles, ham from Luxeuil, and wines from several locations.

At markets and traditional farms, visitors can taste cheese, honey, fruit juices and other local products.

The Ognon Valley offers IGP Cancoillotte as well as wines associated with Hugier, Bucey-lès-Gy, Motey-Besuche, Le Moutherot and Offlanges. Kirsch is a cherry brandy made by distilling local cherries and received AOC status in 2010.
