Montboillon is situated in the wooded landscape of the Monts de Gy. The municipality is characterised by ponds and crossed by numerous streams.
The landscape also includes the 42-hectare Vallon de Fontenelay regional nature reserve, which extends across Bucey-lès-Gy and Montboillon. It comprises meadows, deciduous forests, marl grasslands and fens. The Vallon de Fontenelay can be reached via hiking trails or mountain-bike circuits; however, the core of the reserve and the most sensitive areas are not equipped to receive the public.
Twenty orchid species have been recorded in the Vallon de Fontenelay regional nature reserve, including the bee orchid and the marsh helleborine.

The Château de Gy, a castle, is located near Montboillon. The ruins of the Château de Châtillon-le-Duc are also nearby. The historical sites of Rue des Glacis Ravelin and Avenue Edgar Faure Ravelin are located in the wider regional surroundings of Montboillon. The Church of Saint Nicholas was rebuilt in 1830. It preserves its original furnishings and decoration, including two paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries and copper chandeliers from the 18th century.

Mountain-bike circuit 59, “Vauvenise”, starts at Montboillon town hall. The route is 18 km long, has 350 metres of elevation gain and is considered difficult.
