Nature and Trails

The “Autour du Montaigu et du Mont Jésus” hiking trail is a 23-kilometre, six-hour, difficult circular hike. It begins at the town hall car park in the centre of Esprels; one section follows the GR de Pays and then continues to the village of Vallerois-le-Bois. The “Le prieuré de Marast et le Lauzin” hiking trail also begins in Esprels.

The Ognon River runs through Esprels. The Voie Verte also passes through the village.

Culture and History

At the crossroads of the roads to Vesoul and Chassey, one house has an early 17th-century lintel bearing the year 1616. Another house near the village square dates from the early 17th century and has a distinctive tower.

The church of Esprels houses a Pietà dating from 1511. Its bell tower, in the so-called Imperial style, was rebuilt under the supervision of the Bâtiments de France.

Behind the church of Esprels is the Saint Desle washhouse. It is named after an Irish monk who missionised in the area together with Saint Columban. The washhouse is also associated with a spring said to cure eye diseases.

Numerous remains of Gallo-Roman villas and fragments of mosaics have been found in Esprels. In the immediate vicinity of Esprels, the Romanesque church of Marast was founded in the 1120s. Its architecture is characterised by Cistercian inspiration.

Local

The Gaec Marchand farm in Esprels sells pork and sausages directly from the farm, made from farm-raised pigs. Gaec Marchand prepares its meat on site in an approved processing facility.
