Chariez is listed in the inventory of picturesque sites in the Haute-Saône department. The Maison Forte stands on the site of the castle of Margaret of Bavaria and has been mentioned since 1385. It is a square platform surrounded by thick stone curtain walls with loopholes and gun ports.

The Église de l’Assomption was built between 1781 and 1786 and has been listed as a historic monument since 3 November 1991. The painting “Vierge à l’enfant”, created by Jean-Léon Gérôme in 1859, is still kept in the Église de l’Assomption and is classified as a movable historic monument.

Chariez was once a wine-growing village. The village preserves houses of the nobility and bourgeoisie alongside winegrowers’ houses, bearing witness to its viticultural past.

Nature

Chariez is one of the municipalities within the Natura 2000 site FR4312014 “Pelouses de la région vésulienne et vallée de la Colombine”.

Camp de César is a rocky plateau rising 380 metres above the Cité de Caractère Chariez. Archaeological finds at Camp de César attest to human presence during the Magdalenian period between 17,000 and 14,000 BC.

Things to Do

A suggested cultural and historical tour of Chariez begins in the church forecourt and ends back at the church. Several hikes are possible around Chariez. At Camp de César, there are equipped climbing rocks with routes for various levels of difficulty, a launch site for paragliders and hang-gliders, and hiking trails through varied landscapes.
