Water has been flowing from Châteney’s central fountain washhouse since 1825. In the Middle Ages, Châtenois and Châtenay belonged to the same fief. In the 16th century, Châtenois and Châtenay were separated and subsequently became two independent villages.

The name Châteney is derived from the Old French word chastenay, which meant “chestnut grove”.
