Travelers wishing to rent a holiday apartment in the Frýdek-Místek District will discover a landscape of broad and enclosed valleys, mountains in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids, and numerous historical and cultural monuments that support tourism. The Beskids Protected Landscape Area covers approximately 43% of the district; forests account for 51% of its area, and therefore more than half. The Beskids Protected Landscape Area is characterized by mountain ridges, deep valleys, extensive forests, meadows rich in orchids, and sheep pastures.
Culture and History
Frýdek-Místek has two restored historic centers. The Frýdek-Místek District has the largest number of wooden churches in the Czech Republic. The Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Frýdek-Místek was an important pilgrimage center in Silesia; it is visible from Lysá hora and Radhošť. The Church of Saints John and Paul is located in Místek.
The tower of Hukvaldy Castle offers views toward the Beskids, Kopřivnice, Příbor, Fryčovice, and Ostrava. The castle was probably built in the first half of the 13th century and apparently was never conquered. The best-preserved structure of Hukvaldy Castle is the Chapel of Saint Andrew.
The Beskids Museum is housed in Frýdek Castle and has a permanent exhibition there. Visitors can see the Knights' Hall, climb the observation tower, and visit the Chapel of Saint Barbara. The museum presents traditional crafts and the way of life of the people at the foot of the Beskids. It contains more than 800 exhibits, including a loom, a traditional Wallachian room, and information about sheep farming. The natural history section displays 200 animals from the Beskids, including lynx, wolf, and bear.
Active Experiences
The Beskids within the district offer downhill skiing. Paragliding is available as an active leisure activity in the Beskids area of the district. Water sports are possible at the Žermanice Reservoir.
The Morávka-Sviňorky ski resort has two slopes equipped with snowmaking systems: a 600-meter red slope and a 300-meter blue slope. It offers ski lessons, equipment rental, and transport by horse-drawn sleigh from the parking lot to the slopes.
Mountains and Trails
Lysá hora has several ascent routes and reaches 1,323 meters. The route from Papežov near Krásná to Lysá hora is fully paved and is described as the only route suitable for road cyclists. Ostravice, a frequent starting point for the ascent of Lysá hora, can be reached by train from Frýdek-Místek.
