Staré Hamry: Holiday Apartments and Houses

Staré Hamry is located in the Beskydy Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Beskydy). The village landscape includes characteristic wooden houses preserved in the individual parts of the municipality, along with pastures and small fields that shape the typical landscape of the Beskids.

Nature and Landscape

As a natural monument, Podgruň protects a wet highland meadow on the northwestern slope of the Gruň ridge in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids, an area with rare and protected plant species. The Draplavý Nature Reserve preserves a small remnant of an original, primeval-looking fir and beech forest along the geomorphologically interesting gorge of a mountain stream. Rare and endangered plant and animal species are associated with it.

Churches and Places of Remembrance

The wooden Church of the Virgin Mary on Gruň dates from 1887 and has a rectangular floor plan with a pentagonal presbytery. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 8 October 2002; pilgrimages are held there around the Feast of Mary, Help of Christians, in May. Visits can be arranged in advance at the nearby House of St. Joseph.

The foundation stone of the stone Church of St. Henry in Staré Hamry was laid on 12 July 1863, and the church was completed two years later. The monument to Maryčka Magdónová is a cultural and historical monument and commemorates Petr Bezruč and his Silesian Songs.

Trails and Winter Activities

The Gruň–Bílý Kříž educational trail begins at the Church of St. Henry in Staré Hamry and ends at the Three-Country Stone on the border between Moravia, Silesia and Slovakia. It presents the history of Staré Hamry and the construction of the Šance Reservoir. The Javořina–Němčanka–Samčanka educational trail is approximately 6.7 km long and, together with the picture trail, forms a circular route of about 9 km.

Most of the “Through the Back Mountains by Bike” route runs along paved roads; trekking or mountain bikes are recommended. In winter, this tour can also be undertaken on cross-country skis. The Gruň Ski Park in Staré Hamry has three ski runs with a total length of 3.8 km, a two-seater chairlift and two drag lifts.

Information and Transport Connections

The Šance Information Centre offers school classes, excursion groups and interested visitors a personal guided tour. An interactive system of five touchscreens provides information about the Šance waterworks and the water management system of Povodí Odry.

Bus connections to Staré Hamry are available from Frýdlant nad Ostravicí via Ostravice, as well as from Turzovka in Slovakia.
