The entire municipality of Morávka lies within the Beskydy Protected Landscape Area. Morávka is characterised by deep mountain valleys and wild mountain streams. On the western slope of Travný, the Travný Nature Reserve protects natural fragments of forest stands at elevations between 530 and 1,203 metres. It is also one of the designated protected areas in Morávka.

Nature and Water

The Morávka Reservoir was built between 1961 and 1967 primarily as a source of drinking water and for flood protection. Because it is used for the water supply, all recreational activities and fishing are prohibited on the reservoir.

Trails and Educational Paths

Morávka has had a dense network of marked hiking trails since the first half of the 20th century. These include the ridge trail from Bílý Kříž via Prašivá. Official cycle route 6113 runs through Ostravice, Šance, Visalaje, Morávka, Raškovice and Vyšní Lhoty, and thus passes through Morávka.

The “Wolfram” educational trail comprises nine stations focusing on the dramatic circumstances of the operation and the individual members of the Wolfram parachute group, which was dropped into the Morávka Valley in September 1944. The “Prameny Morávky” educational trail leads from the car park in the Lipové district through the Morávka Valley to the river’s source and focuses on the Morávka River as well as several related activities.

History and Culture

A memorial plaque at the Partyzán restaurant commemorates the court-martial held on 14 December 1944 and is located at the authentic site of the trial. At the Lipové bus stop stands the memorial to the partisan movement “Noční přechod”, popularly known as “Tři hrbatí”; it has been a national cultural monument since 1978.

The timber-built hayloft “Roubený seník” in Morávka was declared a cultural monument as early as 1958. Its exterior is accessible year-round.

The history of the Morávka meteorite is linked to a bright superbolide observed on 6 May 2000. Three of its fragments are now held in the collections of the National Museum in Prague.
