Castellon: Culture, Coast and Historic Paths

Castellon combines a 4.5-kilometre Mediterranean beach with pine trees and dunes with a remarkable density of historic sites, museums and walking routes. The three beaches El Pinar, Gurugú and Serradal together form this long Mediterranean beach. Between an Andalusian fortification, a medieval city wall, a Roman villa and Valencian ceramics, Castellón de la Plana presents a diverse picture.

Culture and History

Castell Vell is a fortification of Andalusian origin. The visitor route at Castell Vell is 400 metres long, has a positive elevation gain of 30 metres and includes seven signposted stations. The Muralla Medieval route follows preserved sections of the former city wall between Plaza Hernán Cortés and Calle San Luis and includes the remains of the Torre de San Pedro.

The Villa Romana de Vinamargo offers an exhibition and a tour through a Roman villa that was inhabited from the 1st to the 5th century AD. The Tetuán air-raid shelter offers self-guided visits with information panels and audiovisual material. It was restored to illustrate the cruelty of wars and their consequences. The privilege of resettlement granted in 1251 is considered the origin of the city of Castelló.

The platform for Castelló's ceramic routes offers three geolocated tours that can be followed via virtual maps and QR codes distributed throughout the city. El Fadrí is a 15th-century bell tower with a spiral staircase of more than 200 steps. The Lonja del Cáñamo was built between 1606 and 1617 by Francisco Galiança on a rectangular floor plan and according to late Renaissance principles; in 1984, it was declared a historic-artistic monument. The Basílica de la Mare de Déu del Lledó was built over two older religious buildings dating back to the 14th century.
