Jérica – Torre de las Campanas, History and Rocky Landscapes

Jérica’s historical character is particularly evident in the Torre de las Campanas, also known as the Torre Mudéjar de Jérica. Three octagonal structures make up the tower; its lower section probably originated from an Arab defensive structure, presumably built in the 12th century. Known as the Torre de las Campanas or Torre de la Alcudia, it is considered the most representative monument in the municipality of Jérica.

Culture and History

The historic site of Jérica preserves remains of defensive architecture, important religious buildings and examples of vernacular architecture. It also includes remains indicating the existence of a prehistoric settlement. Numerous Roman tombstones with Latin inscriptions, as well as coins and fragments of pottery, have been found in Jérica and within the municipal area. Traces from different periods therefore meet here, from early evidence of settlement and Roman finds to later buildings and traditional forms of local architecture.

The Iglesia del Cristo de la Sangre was built in the Baroque style with a rectangular floor plan and a single nave; its present appearance is the result of later Neoclassical alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries. Together with the historic site and the tower, it forms a cultural focal point that clearly contrasts with the landscapes around the Palancia.

Nature

La Vuelta de la Hoz is a meander of the Palancia River, which has eroded the rock face of the mountain. The La Vuelta de la Hoz area has a route or walking path as well as picnic areas. There are also climbing routes with impressive views. This place therefore brings together a geological landscape, a path for walks and designated opportunities for climbing.

In Jérica, paths and routes lead to old trenches, livestock shelters and azudes, historic water-management structures. The Gothic Cruz Cubierta lies outside Jérica’s town centre and is one of the local sights. This makes it possible to consider nature trails, historical evidence and individual buildings as different focal points when planning your day.

The introduction complements the walking paths and picnic areas of La Vuelta de la Hoz, while the routes to trenches, livestock shelters and azudes offer another way to explore the history of the municipal area.

Cuisine and Tradition

Pastel jericano is recommended as a local culinary speciality to try in Jérica. As part of the Fiestas en Honor a la Divina Pastora, a traditional nighttime hand-ringing of the bells takes place in Jérica every year on the Friday before the third Sunday in September, with walnuts, salt cod, bread and wine distributed to those present.
