Nature and Rock Art

The Barranc de la Valltorta is associated with Levantine rock paintings, rural dry-stone architecture and a museum that serves as a visitor reception centre. Guided tours of the various rock shelters are offered at the Barranc de la Valltorta. The Valltorta ecosystem features diverse vegetation as well as Bonelli's eagles (Aquila fasciata) and Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica). The different themes can be planned separately or combined.

Fuente de la Tosca is a recreational area with paella grills, tables, chairs, parking spaces and waste containers. The recreational area and Valltorta area can be included side by side in your personal planning as different natural and cultural highlights.

Culture and History

In the centre of Albocàsser stands the Torre de la Fonteta, a preserved example of 16th-century architecture that served as a watchtower and defensive tower.

The Ermita de San Juan, also known as the Ermita de los Santos Juanes, is a Gothic religious building. Its construction was sponsored by Joan de Brusca in 1240; his mortal remains rest in this building. The hermitage contains woodcarvings and themed altarpieces dedicated to John the Baptist and John the Evangelist.

The parish church of Albocàsser is a severe Baroque building and houses Gothic altarpieces, including the Altarpiece of Hope, ceramic pieces and remains of altars. The religious buildings combine different historical periods and artistic forms.

Festivals and Regional Products

Every year on 7 December, four Quintos—young people who are turning 18—sing at the church door of the Virgin Mary and walk through the streets of Albocàsser with their instruments. They perform Albadas for unmarried women; this is part of the Festa de les Cartes i de la Rondalla de la Puríssima.

Albocàsser hosts an annual fair presenting recipes and products based on almonds. These recurring events focus on different aspects of religious tradition, music and regional products.

Getting Your Bearings Locally

The Ermita de Sant Pere Màrtir was probably built in the mid-15th century; its main nave dates from the end of the 15th century. Every year, a pilgrimage takes place on the Sunday closest to 29 April, during which rosemary is blessed for future collections. The Peiró is a wayside cross at the entrance to the town.
