History and Architecture
Morella Castle is a fortress protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), built using the natural shape of the mountain; from its parade ground, it offers views across the interior of the Valencian Community.
The castle visit follows stairways along the mountain through various areas formerly used for military purposes and can take about an hour.
The Torres de San Miguel form the main entrance to the town of Morella. The two octagonal twin towers from the 14th century are among the outstanding parts of the town-wall structure surrounding the settlement.
During a visit to the Torres de San Miguel, you can view both towers from the inside. The connecting bridge leads you to the terrace, and you can also walk along a section of the battlements as far as the Puerta de la Nevera.
The Basílica Arciprestal Santa María la Mayor has the Apostles’ and Virgins’ portals, a spiral choir staircase and a depiction of the Last Judgment in the choir area.
The Museo Arciprestal belongs to the Basílica Arciprestal Santa María la Mayor and contains significant paintings and religious goldsmith’s work. Museum admission is included in the basilica admission fee.
In the vicinity of Morella are the rock paintings of Morella la Vella, about 6 km away. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage, they belong to Levantine rock art and mainly depict hunting scenes and schematic representations.
