Benicassim: Villa Route, Sandy Beaches and Coastal Views

The Ruta de las Villas in Benicàssim passes through a group of villas dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known as the “Biarritz valenciano.” The route is divided into two routes: “Infierno” and “Corte Celestial.”

Culture and History

Today, 51 villas are catalogued along the Ruta de las Villas. Nineteen of them are signposted, and four buildings enjoy integral protection.

The Torre de Sant Vicent was built between 1597 and 1599 as part of the coastal defence system of Olla de Benicàssim, to protect against corsairs and Barbary pirates. It is one of the best-preserved historic buildings in the Comunitat Valenciana and was classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2001.

The parish church of Santo Tomás de Villanueva was built from 1769 to 1776 and is one of the early examples of neoclassical architecture in Castellón.

Villa Elisa reopened after restoration in 2019 and hosts various sociocultural activities. The Museo Padres Carmelitas has a collection of ceramics, paintings, sculptures, goldsmiths’ work, embroidery and prints from several countries.
