Discover Vall De Almonacid: Sierra de Espadán Natural Park and Castillo
Vall de Almonacid lies in the heart of Sierra de Espadán Natural Park. History and landscape meet on the “El castillo de Almonecir” route: it begins and ends in Vall de Almonacid and leads to the ruins of Castillo de Almonecir.
Nature and trails
The “Vall de Almonacid–Castillo–Alto de Bellido–Barranco de la Rodana” hiking route is 13.41 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty, and has an estimated duration of 3 hours and 20 minutes. The “Serra de Espadán–Vall de Almonacid–Entre dos Tetas–Villamalur–Pavías–Matet–Gaibiel–Vall de Almonacid” mountain biking route is difficult, 50.75 kilometres long, and has an estimated duration of 6 hours and 35 minutes.
The largest and best-preserved group of trenches is located on the “Costalata (trincheras) – Zagalorca” route; from there, you can enjoy a 360-degree view over the Alto Palancia comarca and the Sierra de Espadán. When planning your own day, you can compare route length, difficulty level, estimated duration and activity type separately. Each set of details provides a different planning measure for the tours, without establishing a fixed order for your trip.
Culture and history
The Castillo de Almonecir complex includes a keep with walls more than 18 metres high, a restored cistern, remnants of curtain walls and additional defensive towers. Castillo de Almonecir is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest and was built at the beginning of the 12th century as an Arab monastery with military functions.
The Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción is a single-nave Baroque church. The Gothic altarpiece of San Valero, which can be dated to around 1436, has been preserved inside the church. Vall de Almonacid’s cultural heritage resources also include the Casa Palacio.
The patron saint festivities of Vall de Almonacid take place every year on the second weekend of August. They honour the Santísimo Cristo de la Sangre, the Virgen de los Dolores and the Virgen de la Divina Pastora. When planning personally, you can consider architectural history, individual buildings and works of art, protection status and the date of the festivities as separate topics.
