Cabanes Between Nature Parks and History

The municipal area of Cabanes includes the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Nature Park and the Desert de les Palmes Nature Park.

Nature

The Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Nature Park is included on the list of wetlands of international importance and is the most significant wetland in the province of Castelló. Birdwatching is possible in the nature park. The Desert de les Palmes Nature Park is a coastal mountain landscape; its highest point is Bartolo at 729 metres.

Routes and Coast

Cabanes has more than 100 kilometres of BTT and MTB routes, divided across five routes. From Torre la Sal, the coastal settlement of Cabanes, one route leads on foot or by bicycle to the beaches of the neighbouring municipality of Torreblanca. The SLC1 circular route starts at Plaça dels Hostals in Cabanes, is 5.7 kilometres long and is classified as very easy.

When planning your day, nature observation, cycling routes, coastal paths and the very easy circular route can be weighed against one another as different focal points.

Culture and History

Torre la Sal was built in the 16th century as a coastal watch and defence tower and was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, or BIC for short, in 2002. The Roman Arch of Cabanes stands beside the Via Augusta and is one of the most significant Roman monuments in Valencia's archaeological heritage. The Iberian settlement of Mortórum in Cabanes dates from the 7th to the 1st century BC.

The fortified hermitage of Albalat was built at the end of the 13th century and was converted into a fortified church in the 14th and 15th centuries in response to incursions from the sea. It features raised walls, a terrace with battlements and an exterior apse that was converted into a watchtower.

A guided cultural route through Cabanes leads along the town's streets and follows the layout of the former Muslim alqueria, medieval manor houses, a medieval oven and former defensive gates. Of the historic gates that protected Cabanes, only the Sitjar Gate remains. The route leads to the remains of a fortress of Muslim origin.

The visitor centre of the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Nature Park can be reached from Ribera de Cabanes via a turn-off near kilometre 1000 of the N-340, in the direction of the Torre de la Sal aquaculture institute. Winery

A winery in the centre of Cabanes can be visited by prior appointment. The upper floor of the winery serves as a multipurpose room for events, tastings and presentations.
