Culture and History

MAES presents the settlement history of the Palancia Valley from the Middle Paleolithic to the present day. The museum also showcases the ethnological heritage of Alto Palancia with tools, objects and materials associated with Segorbe’s traditional crafts. MAES is housed in the former Casa-Cuartel on Plaza de los Mesones in the historic centre of Segorbe.

The Gothic cloister of the cathedral was built between the 13th and 14th centuries and preserves seven original chapels. The Museo Catedralicio houses an important collection of religious art, including paintings from the 14th to the 16th century, among them works by Juan de Juanes and Vicente Macip. The museum and cathedral therefore represent different cultural approaches.

Segorbe is a stop on the Ruta del Grial in the Comunitat Valenciana. Another historical trace is the Entrada de Toros y Caballos of Segorbe, which was first mentioned in writing in 1386.
