Discover Calig: History, Nature and Culture
A prominent historical landmark in Càlig is the Torre de Càlig. It is the oldest building in the town and a medieval defensive structure dating from the 13th century. It currently houses the La Torre Cultural Centre, Casa de la Cultura.
The Càlig Tourist Office is located at C/ Teniente Fuentes, 2, 12589 Càlig, Castellón-Castelló.
History and Culture
The Església Parroquial de Sant Llorenç was rebuilt and extended between 1622 and 1659. Its architecture follows a Renaissance style that combines classical tendencies with harmonious simplicity. In contrast to the Torre, the sacred architectural form takes centre stage here; both places offer different cultural perspectives.
The Trinitarian nuns arrived at the Convento de la Santísima Trinitat in July 1905 and continue to reside in the same convent. For historical themes, this site can be considered separately from the buildings described.
Landscape and Trails
La Tossa is connected to Càlig by hiking trails. From the summit of La Tossa, views extend as far as the Ebro Delta and the Illes Columbretes in clear weather. The combination of trail and view can be planned as a distinct landscape focus, independently of the cultural sites.
The Barranco de Aiguaoliva is an area of great botanical importance, where Valencian oaks, violets, tree heaths and strawberry trees grow. Waterfalls can form at the rocas d'en Xiller when there is sufficient water flow. For personal planning, the plant life and water-dependent landscape features can be treated as separate nature themes.
Special Places to Explore
The Sima de Epifanio offers a site for exploration by cavers. Among the dry-stone structures of Neolithic origin scattered throughout the municipality of Càlig are the Casetes de la Volta del Terme. They served as shelters for shepherds, hikers and farmers and are connected to the UNESCO-recognized dry-stone heritage. The different sites allow you to distinguish between caving and cultural-historical landscape features.
You can arrange the focuses according to your own priorities: architecture, convent history, trails, plant life and special places to explore can all be considered separately. A cultural day follows a different rhythm from a plan in which landscape and movement take centre stage. Several interests can also be considered side by side without specifying a fixed itinerary. The historical sites each have a different emphasis: Sant Llorenç combines rebuilding and Renaissance architecture, the Torre represents a medieval defensive function, and the convent is connected with the arrival of the Trinitarian nuns in July 1905. La Tossa and the Barranco, meanwhile, organize the nature themes around trails, views and plant life.
