Discover Cabanes: Coast, Nature and History

Cabanes features a landscape in which the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Natural Park is recognised as a coastal wetland and a wetland of international importance. The Desert de les Palmes Natural Park is a coastal mountain landscape; its highest point is Bartolo, at 729 metres.

Nature and Coast

El Cudolà Beach lies along the coastline of the Prat de Cabanes wetland and stretches for approximately 2,000 metres. In the wider Cabanes area, Quartell Vell Beach features the ruins of an old Carabineros barracks and a coastline measuring 3,300 metres. Torre la Sal Beach preserves elements of its past as a fishing settlement, including traditional fishermen's houses. Four defensive towers, including Torre la Sal, are located in its surroundings.

Trails and Routes

From the coastal settlement of Torre la Sal in Cabanes, a route leads on foot or by bicycle to the beaches of the neighbouring municipality of Torreblanca. The Ruta de les Santes is a very easy, 4-kilometre route that begins and ends at the Ermita de les Santes. El Bartolo i les Santes is an easy, 9.9-kilometre hiking route to Bartolo, the highest point in the natural park, with panoramic views of the Castelló coast and large parts of the inland area.

The route to Miravet Castle is an easy, 4-kilometre walk from the Ermita de les Santes along a marked forest track to the surviving architectural remains of the fortress of Muslim origin. Torre la Sal 2 is a very easy, 6.5-kilometre marked trail along the coast through fossil dunes and wetlands to near the ruins of an old Carabineros barracks.

The Senda Local de Cabanes SLC1 is a very easy, 5.74-kilometre circular route that can be completed on foot or by bicycle. Cabanes also has a BTT/MTB trail network of more than 100 kilometres, spread across five routes. The different lengths, trail types and modes of transport can be compared directly when planning your day.

History and Architecture

The medieval men's prison in Cabanes dates from the 15th century. The Arco Romano de Cabanes is a structure from the 2nd century that has survived to this day. The medieval settlement of Cabanes was protected by walls with four gates; the gates were closed at nightfall.

An archaeological settlement in Cabanes was inhabited between 4,000 and 2,500 years ago, during the Bronze Age and the early Iron Age. The guided Paseo cultural por Cabanes traces the former Muslim settlement, medieval manor houses, a medieval oven and one of the former town gates.

Festivals and Regional Products

The Fira de Sant Andreu in Cabanes has been recognised as a festival of provincial tourist interest. It includes a traditional livestock exhibition and a bonsai exhibition. The Fira de Sant Andreu offers gastronomic products from Castelló, including turrón, confectionery, wine, cheese, cured meats and salted products.
