Traiguera: Sanctuary, Craftsmanship and Olive Oil

The Real Santuario Virgen Fuente de la Salud is a sanctuary in Traiguera that has been protected since 2007 as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of monument. Its origins date back to the 14th century; it is the only sanctuary in the province of Castelló to bear the title “Real”.

Culture

The sanctuary includes a Renaissance portico dating from 1588 and a medieval bell gable, whose construction was completed in 1439.

La Iglesia de la Asunción is an unfinished Renaissance building from the 16th and 17th centuries. It was built on the site of an earlier Gothic church; its side portal was designed according to Vignola’s patterns.

The octagonal bell tower of this church was begun in 1393 and preserves decorative sculptures and Gothic bells.

The Museo parroquial is located in a sacristy of the l’Assumpció church. On display are processional crosses, stone sculptures, Gothic capitals, Roman coins and ceramics.

Craftsmanship and Interpretation

The Centro de interpretación y sala de catas at the Real Santuario Virgen Fuente de la Salud presents the history, cultural heritage and traditions of Traiguera through audiovisual media and 360-degree virtual reality content.

Traiguera’s pottery tradition has been documented since 1392. Historically, it was based on locally available clay, water and firewood, as well as communally used kilns.

History and the Annual Cycle

Portalet y Murallas Medievales preserves the only surviving section of Traiguera’s medieval city walls. The ensemble also includes the remains of the bastioned fortifications expanded in the 17th century, which are protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of monument.

The Feria Romana – Thiar Julia takes place in Traiguera on the first weekend of October and stages scenes and depictions of everyday life in ancient Rome.

On the first Monday after Easter, a procession leads to the Fuente de Sant Vicent; an image stands at its head.

The Oficina de Turismo de Traiguera offers interpretive hikes, olive oil tastings and visits to olive oil producers.

Commented olive oil tastings are also offered at the Centro de interpretación y sala de catas.

Sightseeing, tastings, a seasonal festival date and a cycling tour can be considered as different planning priorities alongside one another.

Route 5 of the Xarxa BTT 100k Traiguera is 33 kilometres long and runs through the northern part of the municipality of Traiguera. It has no major changes in elevation, follows wide dirt and asphalt roads, and is suitable for mountain bikers who ride cross-country.
