Discover Fanzara: Art, Ruins and Nature

In Fanzara, MIAU encompasses more than 170 artistic interventions in the streets, created by 124 artists during ten editions of the festival. On foot, MIAU can be experienced through the streets of Fanzara as a museum without doors or exhibition rooms.

Culture and History

The Ermita del Santo Sepulcro has an extension with a Greek cross floor plan, covered by a dome and decorated with blue glazed tiles. The Ermita can be reached via a steep path with Stations of the Cross; its elevated location offers exceptional views. At the Ruinas Castellet, several sections of wall, the structure of the main tower and the bases of two square towers have been preserved. Ruinas Castellet was probably a small secondary watch post used to control a route or path. The Poblado de Cantalobos consists of the ruins of a settlement from the Late Bronze Age, dated between the 7th and 6th centuries BC, extending across the municipalities of Fanzara and Sueras.

MIAU also includes guided tours and workshops focused on artistic activities in the field of urban art. These formats are offered for schools, groups, associations, families and groups of friends. A self-guided walk through the streets and a guided urban art format provide different ways of approaching the same artistic focus. The cultural offerings range from independent discovery within the townscape to guided engagement with urban art. Together with the Ermita and the historic ruins, they offer various ways of getting to know Fanzara: art in public spaces, a site shaped by religious architecture, and architectural and archaeological evidence.

The combination of street art, religious architecture, wall remains and archaeological traces of settlement makes the historical references of the place visible in different forms. Contemporary interventions stand alongside architectural and archaeological heritage sites, while each location retains its own character and chronological context.

Nature

The Cueva de la Muela is a cave formed by natural erosion in the limestone terrain. A collapse in the Cueva de la Muela prevents access beyond the first section. Molino Bota is one of the natural pools on the Mijares, known in Fanzara as “badinas”. The cave and the natural pool stand side by side in Fanzara as different forms of nature.

Festivals

The Fiestas Patronales de Fanzara, held in honour of Santo Sepulcro, the Virgen de Monserrat and San Roque, take place on the second Sunday in October. The San Antón festival in Fanzara includes the blessing of the animals, bonfires and a horse race called “matxà”, in which the horses avoid several bonfires lit at different locations around the town.
