In Cortes de Arenoso, Cabezo de las Cruces reaches an elevation of 1,710 metres and is described as the second-highest mountain in the province of Castellón. Cortes de Arenoso is home to one of the most significant formations of pine trees and Pyrenean oaks in the Valencian Community. El Rebollo or El Abuelo is considered to be Spain’s oldest Quercus faginea and is more than 700 years old.

Getting Around

Cortes de Arenoso has numerous routes and trails for hiking, running and cycling. The GR 7 E32 begins in San Vicente de Piedrahita, which belongs to Cortes de Arenoso. The waypoints on the GR 7 E32 include San Vicente de Piedrahita, El Cerrito, La Artejuela and Montanejos.

The Área recreativa de la Canaleta recreational area has barbecue facilities, a covered area, tables, chairs and waste bins.

Getting There

From Castellón, the route follows the CV-190 towards Alcora, La Foya, Figueroles, Lucena del Cid and Villahermosa del Río, and then continues via San Vicente de Piedrahita to Cortes de Arenoso. From Valencia, take the A-23, exit 73, and then the A-1515 towards Rubielos de Mora and Fuentes de Rubielos to Cortes de Arenoso.

History

The history of Cortes de Arenoso dates back to the Iberian, Roman and Arab periods. Cortes de Arenoso belonged to the Baronía de Arenós. Cortes de Arenoso has a large archaeological area showing continuous settlement over two millennia; excavations focused mainly on the settlement of Los Morrones.

San Vicente de Piedrahita was founded by the Arabs. The name San Vicente de Piedrahita is associated with the belief that San Vicente Ferrer preached in this area.

Culture

The Calle Herrerías portal is the main gate of the former medieval settlement of Cortes de Arenoso, which was surrounded by a defensive wall. Rincón del Portal is a former entrance to the village with a covered wooden portal.

“Caseríos del cerrito” is designated as a historic centre and as an architectural ensemble of special interest. The “Caseríos del cerrito” ensemble was built predominantly from dry-stone masonry.

The Museo Etnológico del Pan is located in a restored former communal Moorish oven. The Museo Etnológico del Pan displays agricultural tools used for growing wheat; it also exhibits equipment used to make bread. The “Our Lady of the Angels Church” was completed in 1585.

The patron saint festivals of Cortes de Arenoso are celebrated in August in both settlement centres.
