Almazora showcases its toy-making history at the Museu del Joguet. The collection is divided into five periods from 1890 to 1999: early toys, cardboard and tin, the interruption caused by the war, plastics and television, and the Didó movement. The Museu del Joguet d’Almassora was established on December 22, 2010, and presents around 1,100 toys from the historical collection of the Arenós and Agut families in annually changing exhibitions.

Culture and History

The Museo Municipal de Almassora presents the history of the prehistoric settlement of Torrelló de Boverot and its necropolis through more than 100 objects. The objects date from the 8th century BC to the 1st century AD; the museum also explains ancient burial customs and the grave goods used during cremation.

The old town of Almassora is a Christian settlement from the 13th century; surviving sections of the La Murà wall date from the 14th and 15th centuries. Medieval arches from the 14th century have been preserved on Plaza Mayor, where the municipal market was once held. The Iglesia Parroquial de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora is a Baroque-Neoclassical church dating from 1685–1691 and 1864, as well as a monument of local interest.

The remains of Almassora Castle are ruins of Muslim origin on a strategically located promontory by the Mijares River; part of its structure is still visible. Remains from the Bronze Age and Iron Age, as well as traces of Iberian inhabitants, were also found at the site.

Festivals and Markets

The Fiestas de Santa Quiteria take place in May and are recognized as a festival of provincial tourist interest. The main day is May 22, with 22 cauldrons of rice with chicken, followed by a procession from the Ermita de Santa Quiteria to Almassora.

Almassora’s non-permanent markets take place on Tuesdays and Fridays and include approximately 87 stalls, including food stalls. The Festes del Roser are celebrated on the first Sunday in October and include a communal Pa-i-porta dinner.

Nature and Trails

The protected landscape at the mouth of the Millars River was designated in 2011 and includes a ZEPA bird protection zone, a LIC site, and wetlands listed in the regional wetlands catalogue. It extends across Almassora, Vila-real, and Burriana and encompasses a 14-kilometre-long estuarine landscape.

The landscape offers opportunities for birdwatching and hiking, including at Les Goles and on the Senda del Botánico Calduch. The Senda Verde connects Santa Quitèria with Almassora Beach and was designed as a walking and cycling route to the Ermita de Santa Quitèria.

The Ermita de Santa Quiteria is located in Almassora in a nature-rich setting on the banks of the Mijares River. Platja del Pla de la Torre is listed on the municipality’s tourist map as one of Almassora’s beaches.
