Culture and history
In the historic centre, Casa Miralles is one of the stone manor houses with Gothic windows. The Lonja-Casa de la Vila was built between 1417 and 1437, is a well-preserved example of Valencian civil Gothic and is now a cultural space in Catí. In the parish church of the Assumption of Mary, Catí preserves an altarpiece dedicated to Saints Lawrence and Peter of Verona, which is said to have belonged to King Alfonso V.
Casa del Delme was built in the first half of the 14th century. The Gothic building has windows with pointed, lobed arches and slender tracery mullions. Cruz de Avinyó, also known as Prigó de Avinyó, is considered the oldest currently preserved cross of its kind in the Comunitat Valenciana. The interior of Ermita de la Mare de Déu de l’Avellà contains 18th-century frescoes by Pasqual Mespletera.
Trails and pilgrimage
The Romería de Catí to Sant Pere de Castellfort is a two-day pilgrimage along historic paths, covering a distance of 54 km, and takes place on the first Saturday in May. The linear PR-CV 409 hiking trail leads from the public washhouses at Raval del Hospital in Catí to Ermita del Pilar through truffle oak plantations, passing Rambla de la Morellana, Mas d’en Gatella and Mas de Roblasco along the way.
The PR-CV 410 hiking trail is a circular route starting and ending in Catí. It is 18.20 km long and has 750 metres of ascent and descent respectively. It leads to Balneari de l’Avellà and climbs to Tossal de la Nevera; on the way back, it passes old ice houses, gorges and springs. For your planning, pilgrimage, a linear route and a circular hike can be compared as different forms of activity.
Local products
Quesos de Catí produces traditionally crafted cheese from sheep’s and goat’s milk sourced from its own farms. Its range includes traditional fresh cheese and various gourmet varieties.
Landscape and sanctuaries
The sanctuary or spa of Mare de Déu de l’Avellà includes the hermitage, the hermit’s house and the Font de l’Avellà spring. Ermita de la Mare de Déu de l’Avellà is located about 5 km from Catí at an altitude of 960 metres above sea level. Balneario de Nuestra Señora de L’Avellà was recognised as being of public utility in 1928 because of its mineral medicinal waters.
Ermita de Sant Vicent was built between 1610 and 1618; the first mass was celebrated there in 1620. From there, the panoramic view stretches from the town of Xert to Ermita de Santa Bárbara in Tírig. The ruins of Ermita de Sant Josep are considered a destination for peaceful outings.
Nevera del Tossal was built by Joan Bueso in 1636 as a commercial ice store. Nevera del Mas de la Serra is a circular storehouse with a diameter of 8.7 metres and walls one metre thick.
