Gaibiel: Castle, Nature and Holiday Apartment

Discovering Gaibiel begins with the Castillo de Gaibiel. The Almohad castle was built on the remains of an Iberian settlement and was a site of the Spanish Civil War; trenches from that period have been preserved.

Culture and History

The Parroquia de San Pedro Apóstol is designed in the academic Baroque style, and construction work began in 1792. The church contains wall paintings created between 1795 and 1797. The sacred architecture also includes the small Gothic Ermita de San Blas, dedicated to Saint Blaise and dating from the same period as the 18th-century parish church.

The Torre de Dalt, also known as Torre del Dit, stands on a hill. The cylindrical tower, of Muslim origin, served a defensive and lookout function. From the centre of the town, the Torre de Dalt can be reached via an easy excursion in around 15 minutes.

Next to the town hall in the historic centre is the Museo Etnológico de Gaibiel. It displays archaeological materials recovered during work at the Castillo de Gaibiel and has a room for temporary exhibitions. Gaibiel has a rugged landscape and is surrounded by woodland. The municipality contains numerous springs, pools, weirs and alquerías; they reflect centuries of human shaping of the landscape. At 713 m, Monte de La Carrasca is the highest elevation in Gaibiel. As a result, different landscape features stand side by side in the municipality, from water-shaped forms to the wooded ridge.

Gaibiel lies next to the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park. Clear, cool pools form in the riverbed of the Río Regajo, where swimming is possible and aquatic fauna develops. Ridge, woodland, watercourse and historic structures stand side by side here in different forms.
